PROBATE

PROBATE CHARGES TOTAL
Uncontested Grant of Probate £720.00 inclusive of VAT + Court Fee and Office Copies (see below)
Probate Administration Charged hourly as follows
  • Senior Solicitor: £215.00 per hour
  • Junior Solicitor/Legal Exec: £195.00 per hour
  • Paralegal: £145.00 per hour

*All of these charges are plus VAT (currently 20%).

Our fees for this kind of work are charged on an hourly basis (see above), and will consequently depend upon how long a matter takes to deal with. Factors affecting this will include the type and number of assets involved, the number of beneficiaries, the extent to which executors are able or willing to undertake some elements of the work themselves, and the specific terms of an individual will.

We will always discuss with you, before you instruct us, how to deal with the administration of the estate in the most cost-efficient manner, and fully advise you on who will be dealing with the matter (and their level of experience and applicable hourly rate). A bespoke initial costs estimate will be provided once all relevant facts are known, but a typical example of fees would be (based on an average of £185 per hour) :

1. For a basic estate (which involves no complicated investments or shares in a business, and no inheritance tax issues) taking between 15 hours and 30 hours to deal with – £2775 + VAT to £5550 + VAT.

2. For a slightly more complicated estate (which involves no complicated investments or shares in a business – but which do involve some inheritance tax issues and possibly trusts created under the Will) taking between 30 and 50 hours to deal with – £5550 to £9250 + VAT.

3. For even more complicated estates (which involve no complicated investments or shares in a business – but which do involve some inheritance tax issues and possibly trusts created under the Will – as well as business interests) taking between 50 and 90 hours to deal with – £9,250 + VAT to £16,650 + VAT.

Expenses (payable) in top of our own fees

The kind of expenses which we may be required to pay on your behalf (and recover from you as part of our total costs) include :

  • Application Fee for Probate – £273
  • Obtaining official copies of any Grant obtained – £1.50
  • Optional placing of notices in a local publication or the London Gazette – in the region of £190 (this can protect executors from later claims by unknown creditors)
  • Obtaining Bankruptcy searches against a beneficiary – £2.00 per individual
  • An appropriate conveyancing fee where the administration of the estate involves the sale of a property (see details of our conveyancing fees above)
