How Much Does a Will Cost?

Call our team today01482 228808Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm

The cost of a will depends on its complexity, any wider estate planning required, and whether trusts are involved. We confirm the fee in writing before any work begins.

What Affects the Cost of a Will?

The cost of making a will varies based on:

  • Type of Will: A single will is simpler than a will with trusts or complex estate planning.
  • Number of Beneficiaries: More beneficiaries and specific bequests require additional drafting.
  • Tax Planning: If inheritance tax planning is needed, this may increase costs.
  • Additional Services: You may need Power of Attorney, trust creation, or estate planning advice.

Our Fees

A single will, or mirror wills for a couple, will usually cost less than a will containing trusts or inheritance tax planning. We will confirm our fee when you contact us, together with an estimate for any trust or tax planning work.

Do I Need a Solicitor to Write a Will?

While it is possible to write a will yourself, a solicitor ensures your will is legally valid, correctly drafted, and reflects your true wishes. Common risks of DIY wills include:

  • Errors that make the will legally invalid.
  • Disputes due to unclear wording.
  • Failing to properly appoint executors or guardians.
  • Not considering inheritance tax implications.

We make sure your will meets the formal requirements and says what you intend.

Are Online Will Services Reliable?

Online will services can seem convenient, but they often lack the legal oversight needed to make sure a will complies with the law of England and Wales. Common issues include:

  • Generic templates that do not account for individual circumstances.
  • Signing and witnessing that may not meet the legal requirements.
  • No legal advice on complex estates or tax planning.

A will prepared after proper advice is far less likely to fail or to be disputed.

Other Estate Planning Work

Many clients deal with related matters at the same time, including:

  • Lasting powers of attorney
  • Trusts for asset protection
  • Inheritance tax planning
  • Probate and estate administration

We will give you a separate estimate for any of this work.
